The activities of malware Flame undermines the reputation of manufacturers of anti-virus programs

Mikko Hypponen (Chief Research Officer for F-Secure) found that antivirus developers have suffered a complete fiasco. What are the benefits of their products, if viruses circulate freely and work over the years? Flame malware successfully spied on users at least two years, and this is an optimistic estimate! Mikko

Hypponen - a renowned expert who is working on developing antivirus for more than 20 years. In his time he has seen the most dangerous virus outbreaks, including Loveletter, Blaster, Conficker and Stuxnet. So he knows whereof he speaks. Video of a recent speech Mikko Hypponen at the conference TED Talk watched over half a million people!

Flame - this is not the first incident that points to the archaic and ineffective traditional model of antivirus programs. "Flame was a failure for the antivirus software industry - says Mikko Hypponen. - We really should have had the opportunity to do something. But we did not have such an opportunity. We are faced with an opponent from the other league, in our own game."

Reasons for Flame could not find out for years, are clear: any antivirus software running on the basis of signatures, as the virus did not get into this database, it will not be detected. At the same time, developers of the virus Flame done everything possible to avoid detection (eg, Flame check for virus on infected computers).

Thus, the reliability of commercial antivirus is highly questionable. Especially the bad thing is that the antivirus gives users a false sense of security.

Symantec Antivirus revived forgotten iAntivirus

Historically, antivirus software for the operating system Mac OS X is not widespread (especially compared to Windows). Today, the most popular antivirus software for Mac OS - free ClamXav, Sophos AntiVirus for Mac, as well as relatively lightweight iAntivirus. The other antivirus software or do not have a significant popularity among users, or are part of a complex application.

The last antivirus product debuted in 2008. It was a free antivirus developed by PC Tools. Unfortunately, since 2009 when there was a version 1.36, iAntivirus no longer updated.

However, the recent wave of OS X-threats, including Flashback and DNSChanger trojans, as well as fake antivirus MacDefender, back interest from the antivirus product for Mac. In light of this, Symantec has created its own iAntivirus.
iAntivirus is free, but offers only basic features to protect your computer. But despite the fact that this software does not have the functionality that have Norton Antivirus for OS X, it can be used to periodically scan your system and remove malicious programs.

Note that Symantec released iAntivirus as its own product, not related to iAntivirus from PC Tools.

To start iAntivirus requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher and a minimum of 2 GB of RAM. While antivirus is only available in Mac App Store.

Who steals money from users of devices based on Android?

Sadly, the new viruses for Android are discovered more often. So for example, Sophos has detected a rogue antivirus. Link to this virus is spread through Twitter. After clicking on this link, you are prompted to check smartphone for viruses, update Opera or Skype. Instead, the device is infected by a malicious program that sends SMS on paid numbers.

Symantec, in turn, found the Android Opfake program. It was possible to download disguised as the driver, popular game, the pornofilm or updating for the browser. The behavior of this virus is similar to the previous one.

In this regard, the magazine Computerworld shared interesting information. According to the magazine, the majority of malicious software that was created in order to steal money from users of devices based on Android created in China or Russia.

According to director of antivirus company F-Secure, 20% percent of all malicious software for Android-platform created in Russia. A further 20% in China. The remaining 60% of the virus of unknown origin. It is possible that these viruses are also produced in the above-mentioned countries.

Cnet is accused of spreading malicious software

Cnet is accused of distributing adware through his service Cnet Download. The corresponding statement was received from Gordon Lyon (developer Nmap).

"I recently learned that the download from CNet Download.Com turn by the Trojan installer, which performs operations such as installing a toolbar StartNow, change the user default search engine on the Microsoft Bing, and the replacement of the home page for the browser MSN from Microsoft », - said the author of Nmap in your message.

"The system works in such a way that the Cnet download page offers the user download a allegedly Nmap for Windows». Cnet also indicates the correct size of the official file loader. However, the downloaded application before installing the real Nmap does its dirty work "- added the developer.

According to the Nmap creator, Cnet is violating a condition of licensing the product, and possibly U.S. law on cybercrime (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act). In addition, the administration Cnet accused of copyright infringement, as Nmap may not be distributed in conjunction with proprietary installers.

"We have long assumed that the attackers can distribute Nmap with the Trojan installer program, but to us and had no idea that this resource will be engaged in CNet, owned by CBS. We never thought that Microsoft will be sponsoring such activities ", - said the developer.

Free antivirus software for Android to have failed the tests

Many free anti-virus software can not provide sufficiently effective protection of smartphones running the Android platform by introducing thereby user confusion about the safety of their devices.

Tests conducted by the laboratory AV-Test.org, showed that the best free anti-virus for Android, Zoner Antivirus, found 32% of the 160 latest threats. The remaining six free antivirus programs are far behind him, the best of the past has identified only 10% of threats, and one of them has not detected any virus.

AV-Test.org tested seven free antivirus products downloaded from the Android Market (found for "antivirus"). The most common application is Antivirus Free (Creative Apps), which is used by more than a million users. But that is a fraction of the number of users Lookout Mobile Security and AVG DroidSecurity, 12 and 10 million respectively. AV-Test.org not tested these products because Lookout offers a paid anti-virus software, and DroidSecurity - because of its recently acquired by AVG.

This omission does not mean that the results of tests AV-Test.org comprehensive. But even they are a shocking revelation.

Each free antivirus software was installed on a smartphone running Android, which has been deliberately infected with inactive samples of 150 viruses for Android.

AV-Test.org tested all programs to identify these samples.

AV-Test.org included in the test F-Secure Mobile Security and Kaspersky Mobile Security for comparison. And Kaspersky, and F-Secure have discovered more than 50% of all threats, it is much better than the results of free products.

The second part of the test consisted of deliberate attempts to infect the newly updated device 10 viruses for Android. Products F-Secure and Kaspersky detected and blocked all samples. Zoner Antivirus blocked eight, while the other six free antivirus blocked either one or none. BluePoint AntiVirus Free, Kinetoo Malware Scan and Privateer Lite found only one virus. Antivirus Free by Creative Apps, GuardX Antivirus and LabMSF Antivirus beta test failed completely.

"In general, free products have not shown good results (except one), but the paid applications have shown much better results," - said Andreas Marx, CEO of AV-Test.org. "We are working on a critical article, and will focus its attention on the paid applications."

The full report AV-Test.org to test antivirus Android can be found here.

Facebook attacked by Trojans

Facebook users have been victims of the Trojan Win32/Delf.QCZ. This malware disables antivirus programs that are not updated for a long time (meaning the signatures database.)

Social networks continue to be the main source of spread of malicious software. Facebook is no exception.
Specialists of ESET found a Trojan, which is rapidly spreading in a given social network.

The Trojan sends the message to one of the users with the text «Hi! How are you? ». In this case the letter contains the name of the recipient and a malicious link to the video. As soon as you try to watch the video, there is a message to download a new version of Flash Player. After confirming the installation starts downloading malicious code.

According to data obtained by means of early-warning systems ThreatSense.Net, mostly victims of Win32/Delf.QCZ become users in Central and Eastern Europe. The greatest number of infections were recorded in countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Serbia / Montenegro. An increasing number of infections in Israel, Asia-Pacific region, Thailand and Malaysia.

"To prevent infecting your computer with this malware, we strongly recommend that users not in any way not to respond to such messages", said Pavel Demyanenko, head of technical support ESET in Ukraine.

In addition, these messages are easily recognized, especially non-English speaking residents of countries. Due to the increasing number of such attacks, we can advise users of social networks to be extremely cautious. Do not open suspicious attachments and emails from unknown authors and do not click on suspicious links. You should also configure all the necessary security and confidentiality.

In addition, you must install on your computer safe and effective antivirus software with current signature database (license antivirus software with current signature database will provide reliable protection for your computer and prevent infection trojan Win32/Delf.QCZ).

Internet Explorer 9 - the first on protecting users

Internet Explorer 9 is still the most secure browser! In Q2 2011 the company NSS Labs conducted independent research in 20 European countries from Britain to Russia, during which explored how many qualitatively different browsers block websites containing malicious code.

The results showed that due to the filter SmartScreen, Internet Explorer 9 can detect and block 92 per cent malicious websites, it is more than 7 times higher than in other browsers such as Firefox 4 (13 percent) and Chrome 10 (13 percent).

Also, thanks to the "Application Reputation" feature, Internet Explorer 9 identifies remaining 8 percent of threats and warn the user about the danger of downloading malicious software.

Internet Explorer provides additional protection and prevents attacks that use social engineering, detecting and blocking malicious web sites and downloadable files, even if they do not identify with antivirus software. Daily Internet Explorer 9 blocks of 3 to 5 million attacks, far more than any other browser. So if you are using an earlier version of Internet Explorer, you should definitely download Internet Explorer 9!

New trojans for the Android are found!

Researchers have faced a new trojan for Android which sends sms under paid numbers.

Known under name HippoSMS, the new trojan differs that automatically sends SMS on paid telephone numbers and doesn't suppose precautionary messages on expenses which expect users.

It was found out by researchers of the State university of Northern Carolina on July, 10th. Researchers have found HippoSMS in China on alternative Android Market. While it is not known, whether there was a trojan in official shop.

HippoSMS it is built in one of application and it is activated right after to installation on the device working on Android. "Our research shows that HippoSMS is activated together with application", - the assistant to the professor of chair of computer sciences has written Ksuksian Jing.

Then the virus traces entering SMS and deletes everything that is sent by providers of mobile services. Providers usually send the notifying messages, concerning the user accounts (for example, the information on current balance). Deleting messages, the trojan thus hides the information on expenses of the user till the moment of reception of the final account.

At the moment HippSMS works only with users in China and sends SMS only on certain numbers. This sort of viruses which dispatch messages on elite numbers, are extended in Russia, China and Ukraine.

Google is preparing its own antivirus?

Google has launched a technology that allows search engines to determine the presence of viruses on your computer, even if it is not installed an antivirus program.

Distinctive feature of technology that to define presence of viruses, the computer of the user isn't scanned! Instead algorithms Google analyze the data about the traffic which comes on search engine servers.

At the moment, Google does not decide, whether there is a new function constant, but experts say the new feature of Google is able to recognize a wide variety of malicious programs that infect computers working under Windows operating system.

"Recently, in the ordinary course of procedures for improving performance in one of our data centers, we found an unusual type of search traffic," - says an engineer on Google Information Security Demian Mensher.

Google engineers have found that such traffic typically comes from malware infected computers.

The fact that some types of malicious software changing the configuration of your computer so that he missed the entire network traffic, or any part of it through a proxy server owned by criminals. The operating principle of the Google algorithm is based on an analysis of the route by which to transfer data from computer servers at Google. And if this route is questionable, Google displays a message about the danger.

It is necessary to notice that for today Google doesn't offer own antivirus product, and simply informs them on possible infections.
