43 million computers infected by fake antivirus



Company Symantec announced the results of research in the field of computer security - Report on Rogue Security Software. It was held in the period from July 2008 to June 2009. It turns out that in order to infect computers with malware, cyber criminals are trying to disguise it under Useful software, basically, anti-virus software. 93% of fake antivirus programs of the 50 most common was downloaded and installed by users themselves, says Symantec. In June 2009 the company identified 250 different malicious programs disguised as anti-virus software and other software that supposedly providing security of your computer from attacks. Total infected about 43 million computers.

In this case, users pay for fake antivirus programs from $ 30 to $ 100, and this may be only an initial contribution. And these programs not only provide security, but also harm the system. For example, they may collect personal user data, including usernames, passwords, credit card numbers and so on, and install malicious code, which makes the computer defenseless against attacks by hackers.
